On May 17, 2026, the spectacular finale of The Orkney Vintage May Cavalcade took place at HMS Tern!
An astonishing collection of vintage cars, motorbikes, and commercial vehicles embarked on a journey over 80 miles of breathtaking Orkney landscapes, culminating at the airfield around 1:00 PM. The parade of classic vehicles captured the attention of onlookers as it weaved through the charming countryside, showcasing the rich history of automotive design.
Upon arrival, the dedicated staff and enthusiastic volunteers welcomed nearly 100 visitors, ensuring a memorable and informative experience. They organised a variety of displays that highlighted the significance of the airfield and its historical context. Additionally, living history tours were conducted around the remnants of the former World War II training airfield, where guides shared fascinating stories about the site’s past, the pilots who trained there, and the critical role it played during the war.
The Orkney Vintage Club, established in 1982 and located in Kirkwall, serves as a hub for enthusiasts of vintage machinery and vehicles. The club welcomes a diverse range of members who share a passion for all things vintage, including classic cars, tractors, stationary engines, motorcycles, and various farm implements and machinery.
Through a variety of events, exhibitions, and gatherings, the club provides members with opportunities to showcase their prized possessions, exchange knowledge, and celebrate the historical significance of these fascinating machines. Whether you own a beloved classic or simply have a keen interest in the mechanics and history behind vintage equipment, the Orkney Vintage Club offers a welcoming community where enthusiasts can connect and share their love for vintage heritage.

Lindsay Bailey, the Site Manager of HMS Tern, expressed her excitement, stating, “We are thrilled to host the grand finale of the Orkney Vintage Club Cavalcade. It’s a wonderful celebration set against the stunning historical backdrop of HMS Tern. The event was a great success and provided an exhilarating day for everyone involved. We look forward to more exciting events like this as the year progresses.”
The dedicated staff at HMS Tern are creating a Living Museum, recreating the look, smell and feel of a World War II training airfield on Orkney. The goal is to bring to life the historical setting and daily life during the Second World War through guided tours, events, and talks, all set in the beautifully preserved surroundings of an airfield in the landscape.
The site is extensive, offering a wide range of attractions. From the control tower, where trainee pilots received clearance to take off and land during challenging training missions over the North Atlantic, to air raid shelters and even a cinema, there is much to explore. It provides a glimpse into the lives of the men and women stationed at this bustling outpost off the northern coast of mainland Scotland. Additionally, you can look forward to an increasing number of events and activities throughout the season.
HMS Tern is located on the west side of Orkney Mainland and can be found using the postcode KW17 2JH.
